The deputy director of Shenzhen’s customs service, Wu Rongchang, has announced that Shenzhen will soon be implementing a trial version of a smart-card-based system which to allow faster customs procedures at Huanggang Port.

The so-called "self-service electronic verification system" would allow those equipped with the cards to clear customs with much less paperwork. If the trials prove to be successful, Mr Rongchang said that the system will also be rolled out in Wenjingdu and Shatoujiao as soon as July 2002.
