‘Dr Scholl’ dies aged 81

William Scholl, the British inventor of the Dr Scholl contoured ‘Original Exercise Sandal’, has died at the age of 81.

An orthopaedic specialist, Scholl came up with the design for the wooden sandal in the late 1950s. Sculpted to fit the foot, and sold under the banner "Looking good and doing you good", ‘Dr Scholls’ quickly became a staple fashion item for women in the 1960s and were claimed to provide significant orthopaedic and exercise benefits.

Scholl died March 15 from a rare form of pneumonia at a hospice in Douglas on the Isle of Man, an island off the north west coast of England.
