Ecco to invest $10 million in Thai facility

Ecco is to double the production capacity at its Ayutthaya plant in Thailand to six million pairs per year by 2005 with an investment of around $10 million, according to local reports. The Danish footwear manufacturer currently produces around 12 million pairs worldwide.

The expansion in Thailand is consistent with a move away from traditional production centres such as Ecco’s plant in Portugal, where capacity has been reduced from 3.5 million to 2 million pairs per year. An effort to cut costs has seen the company move manufacturing to Slovakia and Thailand this year.

Ecco Thailand is a joint venture with Bangkok Rubber - a subsidiary of the Saha Group - but is 95% owned by the Danish firm.
