Russian prime minister Mikhail Kasyanov has said the country’s foreign debt is now "within safe limits". The statement was made after figures released by the finance ministry revealed that foreign debt fell by more than $19 billion in 2001.

As of January 1, 2002, Russia's internal debt stood at 531.1 billion roubles ($17.3 billion) while the foreign debt was $138.1 billion - down from $157.4 billion a year earlier. Kasyanov said that the state previously had to spend some 30% of its gross domestic product to service the foreign debt, a figure now reduced to 20%.
