China: imports and exports of leather goods, 2001
The Chinese Leather Industry Association (CLIA) has released figures showing that China’s exports in leather and leather goods rose 6.1% in 2001 to $12.58 billion compared with 2000. The sector now accounts for 4.7% of China’s national export volume.
Splitting the overall results into individual sectors, only leather footwear fell (-0.5%) while exports of raw hide and tanned leather increased by 65.6%, fur garments by 29.8%, leather gloves 21.3%, footwear accessories and similar products 9.3%, leather garments 7.9%, and leather cases 0.8%.
Imports of raw hides and leather (excluding fur) for the 12 months to December 31, 2001 reached $3 billion - an increase of 6.5% over the previous year, but imports of footwear accessories and machinery for tanners and footwear manufacturers decreased by $290 million and $81 million - a drop of 1.3% and 5% respectively.
