Average GDP growth slows to 6% for CIS countries in 2001
CIS countries boosted their GDP by an average of 6% year-on-year in 2001, according to figures from the CIS Interstate Statistics Committee. The figure represents a decrease in the rate of growth when compared with 2000 when GDP went up by an average of 8%.
The highest levels of growth were recorded by Kazakhstan (13.2%) and Tajikistan (10.2%). Elsewhere GDP rose by 9.9% in Azerbaijan, 9.6% in Armenia, 9.0% in Ukraine, 4.1% in Belarus, 4.5% in Georgia, 5.3% in Kyrgyzstan, 6.1% in Moldova and 4.5% (for the first nine months of 2001) in Uzbekistan. In Russia, output in the key sectors of production and services increased by 5.7% in 2001 compared with 2000.
Industrial output was up 7% on average in the CIS in 2001 compared with 2000, with 14.8% growth in Tajikistan, 14.2% in Ukraine and Moldova, 13.5% in Kazakhstan, 5.4% in Belarus and Kyrgyzstan, 5.1% in Azerbaijan, 4.9% in Russia and 3.8% in Armenia. Production fell 1.1% in Georgia.
