Pakistan: leather exports fall July to January 2002

Figures released by the Pakistan’s Federal Bureau of Statistics reveal a fall in exports of leather and leather goods (excluding footwear) for the first seven months of the current financial year (July 2001 to January 2002). Exports were down almost $14 million to $376.43 million compared with $390.2 million, in the corresponding period for the previous year.

According to exporters, trade in finished leather has been left largely unaffected by the aftermath of the September 11 attacks on the US while the garment sector is still being negatively affected. Out of total exports finished leather accounted for $131.7 million compared with $119.8 million in the previous year - an increase of almost 10%. Exports in leather manufacturing fell by a similar figure, down 9.5% to $244.7 million from $272.4 million the year before.

In the month of January, 2002 Pakistan leather exports rose almost 12% to $17 million from $15.1 million in December while exports in leather manufacturing fell 12.7% to $23.7 million from $27.1 million in December.
