Caldwell/Moser Leather facing closure
Caldwell/Moser Leather Co. could be closing their doors and liquidating the business only just over a year after the firm was bought from United States Leather Inc. A spokesman for the firm was unable to confirm the reports, saying that negotiations were ongoing, but added that an announcement to the press was imminent.
The tannery, based in New Albany, manufactures vegetable tanned side leather, latigo and rawhide for the saddlery and specialty trades. It also produces leather laces cut for the worldwide shoe industry. The company was founded in 1863 and employs 70 people.
The company was sold by United States Leather Inc. in December 2000 and a new management team was put in place by principal owner and president Dave Shield.
