Munro closes DeWitt and Clarendon plants
Mickey Hennessey, chief executive officer of US footwear manufacturer Munro & Co., has announced that the company has closed its DeWitt Shoe Co. plant in DeWitt, Arkansas, and its satellite plant, Clarendon Footwear.
The closures mean the company will be releasing 200 workers at the DeWitt plant and another 60 at the Clarendon facility. These plants have been in business for 40 years producing men's casuals for a number of brand name firms.
Molly Munro, vice president of the company, pledged that none of the other four Munro plants in Arkansas would be affected. She did mention, however, that there would be some restructuring throughout the company in an effort to improve customer service.
According to Hennessey, the loss of the plants was due to the soft retail environment in the US at present, and the loss of a major customer.
