Leather industry in Haining continues to grow
Statistics from the China Leather Information Center (CLIC) suggest that Haining is consolidating its position as China’s most important city in terms of production of leather goods. The volume of sales at Haining-based China Leather Mall reached $472.2 million in 2001, while total output of leather goods for the city also increased slightly in 2001, rising to $1.08 billion
Haining has long been known as the "leather capital" of China, and now has more than 5,600 leather enterprises mainly producing leather garments and accessories. Trade volume in fur and leather amounts to one million pieces every year, and the annual Haining China Leather Fair brings domestic and foreign visitors to the city.
In order to consolidate its position in the leather industry in China, the city is building a large Leather Technology and Industrial Park, which is designed to become an information and technology centre as well as a leather production base in the country.
