AAFA supports US proposal of free trade agreement with Central America
The American Apparel and Footwear Association (AAFA) has backed the move by US president Bush to explore a free trade agreement with countries in Central America. The AAFA president Kevin Burke said the announcement was: "a positive first step in creating a free trade zone within the Western Hemisphere that will strengthen the economies of every country involved."
President Bush spoke of the initiative at the World Affairs Council’s National Conference at the Organisation of American States in Washington, DC. He said that the countries of Central America had made good progress in pursuing economic and social reforms, but added more could be done to reinforce the achievements.
The US currently only has a free trade agreement with two countries in the Western Hemisphere – Canada and Mexico – through the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
