Wages for Polish leather workers fall behind

31/01/2002

According to Poland’s main statistical service (GUS), wages for industrial workers in Poland rose on average by only 1.6% in 2001, with workers in some industries doing markedly better than others. Employees in leather manufacturing firms experienced a 2% drop in wages, while those in post offices and telecoms saw pay rise by 7%.

The highest wages went to people employed by companies producing coke and refining crude oil, where the monthly pay-cheque is ZL3757 ($902) a month (gross). Second were those in the tobacco industry, where full-time employees are offered ZL3684 a month. Relatively badly off are textile workers who earn on average three times less than miners who received on average ZL3559 a month in 2001.
