Chairman of PTA calls for investment in research
Masood Shaikh, chairman of the Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA), has called for an injection of investment into research and development in order to improve the quality produced by Pakistan’s leather industry.
Speaking at the first working session at a seminar on "Challenges and Potentials for Small and Medium Enterprises (SME)" organised by the Habib Bank in Karachi, he said "We must do research to have a roadmap for quality".
The chairman of the PTA said that Pakistan's leather industry had grown gradually over the last fifty years with very little expenditure on research and development or technology. The PTA chairman said that to achieve higher quality manufacturers should try and ensure greater consistency in production processes, which means higher costs. He said that research and development is a key factor in creating technologies capable of improving quality and solving problems related to environmental and social issues.
