Leather exports for Pakistan fall in second half of 2001
Provisional data released by Pakistan’s Federal Bureau of Statistics on Wednesday, January 9, 2002 suggests that the country is continuing to feel the effects of the drop in orders since September 11.
According to the figures, in the six-month period from July-December 2001 the country exported leather and leather goods (excluding footwear) with a value of $332.027 million. That represents a fall of over $10 million compared with the corresponding period in the previous year, when exports reached $342.351 million.
The breakdown of the figures showed exports of finished leather rose to $115.786 million compared with $102.200 million in the same period in 2000 - an increase of 13.29%. The fall came in leather goods, where exports dropped 9.96% to $216.241 million from $240.151 million the previous year.
In the month of December, Pakistan exported $16.244 million of leather and $22.254 million of leather goods, against $17.990 million and $34.091 million in November 2001, a drop of 9.71% and 34.72% respectively.
