Cambrelle unveils plans to counter the counterfeiters

DuPont has announced a series of measures to give its branded footwear lining Cambrelle better protection against trademark infringement. Global business manager for Cambrelle, Kieran O’Hare, said: "Cambrelle has attracted more than its fair share of imitators down the years, both in terms of products which copy the lining’s distinctive pique pattern and products bearing similar names."

To counter the situation the company has put together a campaign to raise the issue of trademark protection with footwear designers. DuPont has already begun taking legal action against those companies that have knowingly infringed its trademark rights. This will be backed by a ‘Purchase & Test’ programme, under which random purchases of footwear will be made at retail to ensure that Cambrelle is being used.

Says Kieran O’Hare: "As the recent success of Levi Strauss & Co. in the European Court of Justice shows, the courts take the issue of brand infringement extremely seriously and will not hesitate to take decisive action in favour of the brand owner when it is called for."
