China’s leather exports top $10 billion during first ten months of 2001
According to the latest statistics from the Chinese government, the export and import of leather goods in China rose in the first ten months of 2001 despite the impact of an unstable international situation after September 11.
China’s import-export statistics from January-October 2001 show that the export of leather goods totalled $10.4 billion, an increase of 7.5% over the same period in 2000 and accounting for 4.8% of China’s exports.
All categories of leather goods experienced increases except leather shoes. The export of raw hides and tanned leather increased by the greatest margin (80.3%), while the export of fur garments increased by 19.9 %, leather gloves 19%, leather garments 16.6%, and footwear accessories 8.8%.
Compared with the same period in 2000, the import of raw hides and leather during the ten months also increased 10.7% to $2.6 billion, while footwear accessories rose $240 million, an increase of 0.9 %. But the import of shoe-making and tannery machinery fell by 8.7%, to $87 million.
