Pakistan to take anti-dumping measures against Chinese footwear imports
Pakistan's commerce minister Abdul Razak Dawood said that his government is aware of the problem of dumping of footwear from China and said that anti-dumping measures will be instigated. The statement came during a press conference at the head office of Pakistan’s Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) in Karachi on Monday, December 31, 2001.
The minister added that the government has received two other reports on dumping but would not identify the products and the countries from where the goods originated, saying: "we are in the process of putting in place an anti-dumping law, a mechanism to proceed and take action."
Pakistan has never previously taken anti-dumping measures against any country and there is therefore a lack of technical expertise in this area. Mr Razak Dawood said: "We want to be sure of our own skills in anti-dumping proceedings before we make public the products and the countries."
With regards to China, Razak Dawood noted that the country’s entry into the World Trade Organisation (WTO) is both "a challenge and an opportunity" for Pakistan, pointing out that "China also offers a market of 240 billion dollars a year".
