Indian leather exports suffer
Indian leather exports grew by a disappointing 0.9% from April – September 2001 according provisional data from the country’s Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics. The Council for Leather Exports (CLE) blamed the drop in trade following the September 11 terrorist attacks in the US.
Exports of leather goods according to the figures were $1013.64 million from April-September compared with $1012.70 million during the previous year.
The non-leather footwear and finished leather goods categories showed growth but all others experienced a fall during the period. Exports of leather footwear were down 3.52% while leather goods, saddlery and harnesses fell 14.96% and 24.11% respectively between April-September.
With the US accounting for nearly 17% of India's leather export market the 15% fall in exports to that country had a deep impact on the overall figures.
