Polish leather companies discuss EU accession

11/12/2001
A meeting of about 70 footwear and leather companies with the Polish Chamber for the Shoe and Leather Industry (PCSLI) took place last week in Zakopane in Poland’s Tatra mountains. The reason for the meeting was to discuss the problems facing the leather and footwear sectors with regards to Poland’s aspiration to join European Union (EU) in 2004.

An EU report on the footwear and leather sector including applicant countries was presented which included all those countries aspiring to join EU in the near future. Although it was said that Poland had made good progress in upgrading and modernising the footwear and leather sector, a lot of work is still left to be done. A significant problem underlined by the meeting was the fragmentation of the Polish leather and footwear sector, with only a minority belonging to the PCSLI and others part of another leather association in Radom. Several companies that are members of both chambers promised to work towards a quick merger of both associations.
