Brazil to review 9% duty on wet blue exports
Brazil’s Cadeia Produtiva de Couros e Calcados has said it will re-evaluate the country’s 9% export tax on wet blue before the end of the year.
The lifting of the duty, which was introduced in November 2000, has been demanded by a number of leading tanners who say they were never consulted before its imposition. They also dispute its effectiveness as a measure for helping the domestic leather goods trade. The reported 73% increase in leather goods exports since August was mainly due to the falsification of export documentation and not the duty, the tanners claim, and that the real figure is closer to 2%.
