The Bangladesh Finished Leather, Leather Goods, and Footwear Exporters' Association (BFLLFEA) has announced it will stage the fourth Dhaka International Leather Fair (DILF) 2002 from January 27 next year. The fair was delayed earlier this year due to the tragic events of September 11 and the subsequent US air strikes in Afghanistan

Mr Sattar Bhuiyan, president of the BFLLFEA, explained: "We had temporarily suspended the fair earlier. But as the situation improved, we have decided to organise the event for the fourth time". He said that the event will feature a fashion show with the participation of local and foreign models.

Around 30 local and 15 foreign companies have so far confirmed their participation in the three-day gala exposition, which will be held at Sonargaon Hotel in Dhaka. Last year around 59 local participants displayed footwear, leather bags and other leather goods, crust and finished leather while 29 foreign companies exhibited mainly high-tech machinery.

Bangladesh exported leather and leather goods worth $302.10 million for the 12 months to June 2001, compared with $232.91 million for the previous year. Over the period July-September 2001, the leather sector also posted good figures, earning $59.18 million – an improvement of 4.13% on the previous year. Bangladesh has an annual capacity of 180 million square feet of leather. More than 80% of the country's annual output is exported as semi-finished and finished leather, leather goods and footwear.
