The Chennai-based Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI) has been asked by chief minister Chandrababu Naidu to look into launching a state-level educational programme for leather technology, according to newspaper reports.

The government has identified leather as a growth sector and therefore sees it as an important part of the drive to achieve goals set out in the Vision 2020 document. CLRI director Ramasami said that introducing leather technology courses in the state would give a boost to the industry and could provide employment for a large number of people.
