03/12/2001

According to the CICB (Centre for the Brazilian Tanning Industry), the value of Brazilian leather exports grew by 18.8% to $613 million in the first nine months of the year. Most of this growth was accounted for by the increase in wet blue leather exports, which reached $296 million. In second place were exports of crust, which accounted for $186 million (up 44% if compared with the same period last year). Wet-salted leather exports grew by a massive 273% to $3.2 million while exports of finished leather were up 38% to $145.4 million.

The most important destination for Brazilian leather exports remains Italy, with an increase of 32% in September alone. After Italy, the next most important markets for Brazilian leather are China, Hong Kong, the US, Portugal, Uruguay and Spain.
