Leather exports slow as Pakistan feels effects of September 11

14/11/2001

Pakistan exported $231 million worth of finished leather and leather manufactures (excluding footwear) during the first four months of the current financial year (July to October 2001), according to provisional data released by Bureau of Statistics on November 10. The figure represents a small increase on last year when exports were $228.47 million over the same period.

In terms of dollar value, finished leather exports rose by 19.78% to $80.09 million while leather manufactures fell 6.6% to $150.91 million. The decrease in the amount of leather garments or manufactures exported is due to a drop in orders since the tragic events of September 11.

In the month of October Pakistan exported $18.755 million worth of leather and $27.89 million of leather manufacturing, compared with $20.91 million and $45.20 million in the previous month - a fall of 10.32% and 38.29% respectively.
