Bangladesh air surcharge seen as harming leather exports

10/11/2001

Bangladesh’s Finished Leather and Leather Goods Exporters Association has
called upon the government to withdraw its newly-imposed insurance surcharge on
on air cargo freight.

The Association said the surcharge will only serve to reduce the competitiveness of the country’s exports in the international market, which are already in decline. In the wake of the US terrorist attacks, the government-owned national airline, Biman, has levied Tk2.85 ($.05) on every kilogram of cargo – a factor that is bound to drive up the cost of the 20% of leather goods which are exported by air, an official of the Association said.
