According to figures newly released by the country’s General Statistics Office, Vietnam’s imports of raw materials for the leather, garment, and textile industries increased by a healthy 25% year-on-year during the first eight months of the year.

Other big rises were noted in automobile imports (up 90%) and iron and steel (up 16%). Imports by domestic firms accounted for more than US$9.1 billion, representing an increase of 0.3%, while those of foreign-owned enterprises were up by 9.1% to US$3.8 billion.

By comparison, Vietnam’s exports were up by only 8% during the same period – well down on the 16% target set by the government.
