Celine to celebrate the Euro in style

05/11/2001
A tribute to the national currencies in Europe that will disappear at the end of the year has been unveiled by French fashion house Celine. The leather goods firm is one of the few companies to develop a line of fashion items designed to coincide with the introduction of the Euro when 12 countries will adopt the new European currency.

Leather goods such as handbags, belts and purses will be included in the line. An example of the type of products we can expect was revealed by Chairman Jean-Marc Loubier, who presented a chocolate brown calfskin handbag on which 12 coins were stitched together to symbolise their integration into one currency. The idea is to celebrate the European project but also to create something that will conserve the memory of the currencies that are being sacrificed.

The leather goods will not come cheap in any currency, however, with handbags costing around Euro790 ($715) belts at Euro380, and purses at Euro170. The products are due to be launched some time in November.
