Armenian leather links with China in line for boost

Armenia’s trade links with China - including those that involve the production and exchange of leather - could soon be in line for a boost.

In an interview with the national Chinese press in Moscow last week, the Armenian Prime Minister Andranik Markaryan said the strengthening of economic and trade ties between Armenia and China was in the interest of both sides. He also repeated his suggestion, originally made during his visit to Beijing in December 2000, that China should give consideration to the establishment of joint ventures for the production of leather, textiles and pure silk in Armenia.

Currently, Chinese goods account for 0.6% of Armenia’s total imports - the main commodities being inorganic chemical fertilisers, footwear, toys, paper, and knitted products. Armenia mainly exports wood and wood products to China.
