Uzbek clampdown on FMD offenders yields results

An Uzbek government commission for the prevention of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) has held a meeting to consider epidemic situation in border areas of the country. According to data newly released by the commission, 3,584 tons of suspicious meat has so far been confiscated.

The commission also revealed that 868 medical brigades and 4,198 veterinarians had inspected a total of 7,430,600 cattle and 9,917,7000 sheep for signs of the disease, and that more than 40 livestock markets in the regions of Djizzak, Kashkadarya, Samarkand, Namangan, Surkhandarya had been shut down.

The clampdown had resulted in 9,530 people facing administrative punishment for violating epidemic and veterinarian rules, and fines totalling 8.5 million Soums being collected.
