Brazilian trivalent chrome waste still seen as a hazardous

22/10/2001

An attempt by the Brazilian footwear and leather trade to bring Brazilian Standard 10004 into line with U.S. standards - and have a distinction drawn between the disposal treatments for trivalent and hexavelant chrome waste - has failed.

The tanners had been looking to have trivalent chrome reclassified as less hazardous ‘Class 2’ material, in line with US practices. During a recent meeting of the Special Temporary Study Commission for Solid Waste, however, it was decided that all tannery and footwear waste should retains its 'Class 1' (dangerous substances) status. This means trivalent chrome will continue to be included in the same high risk category as herbicides, pesticides, poisons and metals such as mercury and cadmium, and hexavelant chrome.
