Danish trade union helps informal workers in Ghana

The Danish Women’s Trades Union Organisation is supporting a project in Ghana to create a national association for informal workers including leather workers, basket weavers and others. The national association will be formed under the auspices of the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU) of the Trades Union Congress.

It is hoped that the project will incorporate the informal workers and their families in the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) as well as mobilising the workers to improve their incomes. The ICU said it would help workers to gain access to capital to expand their businesses whilst encouraging them to add value to their products by improving design and quality.
