Ukrainian police targets illicit footwear imports

01/10/2001

Ukrainian police have recently confiscated some 25,000 pairs of illegally imported shoes in a raid in the remote Carpathian region of the country.

Manufactured in Hungary, China and Turkey, the shoes were being sold at local markets at less than half the price of legitimately sourced items. No shipping documents were found with the stock whose owners have yet to be traced.  The Ukrainian police is said to take the trade in illicit footwear extremely seriously as it brings heavy losses to the state budget.
