Russia is stepping up its campaign to join the World Trade Organisation (WTO) with plans to hold talks with 10 to 15 countries over tariffs at the end of September.

The WTO's working group on Russian membership is due to meet at the beginning of 2002, so Russia is trying to initiate a new wave of tariff negotiations in advance. The country's chief WTO negotiator is presently in talks with Norway in Oslo.
