Call for government aid in Pakistan to solve pollution problems
The Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) is seeking government aid to set up an effluent treatment plant in Sialkot. The 234 tanneries are a source of pollution and there is concern that without proper treatment, it poses a threat to the health of the local population.
The SCCI argues that the government's Export Development Fund (EDF) should provide some help as the tanneries earn around $200 million each year in exports and employ thousands of people.
