EU rejects Hungarian subsidy bid

In a draft policy statement, the European Commission said last week that it will reject Hungary’s request for a five year exemption from the ban that applies to national agricultural subsidies.

The Central Statistics Office (KSH) said Hungary’s farmgate prices rose by 14.7% in the first seven months this year compared to the same period of last year. First-half farmgate prices were up 22.1%, but the July rise was only 8.8%. It also said consumer prices fell by 0.2% in August from July and stood 8.7% higher than last August. Food prices fell by 1.0% in August compared to July, mainly as the result of a 13.5% decline in prices of seasonal foods such as fresh fruit and vegetables.
