Polish tannery makes 50 redundant

17/09/2001

Fifty out of 300 workers have lost their jobs at the Asko Tannery in Nysa, Southern Poland.

Considered to be one of Poland’s better leather producers, the tannery is one of a dwindling number of co-operative enterprises in the country. Mieczyslaw Warzocha, President of Asko, has attributed the company’s predicament to a combination of a slump in domestic footwear sales and a strong Zloty. Exports of finished leather to Germany are said to have been especially badly hit by the unfavourable exchange rate.

The traditional July holidays at Polish tanneries were extended well until August at Asko, but even now it is still only working at half its capacity. The 50 redundancies already made are not expected to be the last will inevitably contribute to the already high levels of unemployment in the region.
