Duty free leather ‘pouring in’ to South Africa

17/09/2001

Reports from South Africa say the shrinkage in the footwear sector caused by Indian imports appears to have stabilised in recent months, following the government’s introduction of anti-dumping legislation.

However, the same report notes the domestic tanning sector has yet to be afforded the same level of protection and that Indian leather is still ‘pouring in’ duty free. To add to the tanners’ problems, the footwear producers were also said to be pushing for a rebate on the 10% duty that applies to leather from South America. If they succeed, it will further reduce competitiveness of domestic leather in relation to the duty free imports.
