Colombian leather exports help offset slump in coffee and oil

Along with bananas and flowers, leather production helped offset the slump in Colombian coffee and oil exports in July.

Nevertheless, the country’s total exports still fell 6.5% year on year, largely as a result of terrorist activity and the bombing of a number of pipelines. Exports of coffee – Colombia’s second-largest export commodity – continued to be badly affected by the slump in world coffee prices.

According to a report released by the government’s national statistics department, total exports for the first seven months of the year amounted to $7.12 billion – 3.47% down on the year-before period.  Observers say that had it not been for the rapid growth in non-traditional exports, including leather, the export situation could have been a great deal worse.
