Reebok and addidas step up basketball sponsorship

10/09/2001

Nike appears to be losing its grip on the lucrative basketball shoe market. Reebok's 10-year deal with the NBA agreed earlier this month has been quickly followed by a move from addidas to link up with up with Kwame Brown, one of the league's biggest stars. The Washington Wizards rookie has signed a multi-year contract with the sportswear retailer estimated to be worth over $400,000 a year for three years.

Nike has traditionally been the most dominant sponsor of basketball in the US, but the increased involvement of companies like Reebok and addidas has seen the company's share of the market for basketball shoes fall more than 10% in the first half of 2001.
