Yili port set to become largest leather production base in Northwest China

10/09/2001

Legislation regulating the processing of imported hides and skins is helping Yili port in Xinjiang province to become the largest wet blue hide production base in Northwest China.

The State Administration for Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine of the People’s Republic of China (CIQSA) introduced a law in early 2000 stipulating that imported hides and skins are processed where they are unloaded to prevent the possible spread of disease. Thanks to the new legislation, Yili processed 700,000 cow hides and over a million sheep skins and horse hides in the second half of 2000 alone.

Yili is ideally located for imports from Asian countries and is a key port for the Xinjang province. Moreover the climate is suitable for the processing and storage of skins and hides. The steady expansion of China's leather industry should guarantee a bright future for the port as a major centre for the processing of hides and skins.
