US restores duty-free status to Indian leather imports
The US has extended its duty-free import status to 42 products from India, according to the Press Trust of India (PTI). Products include leather, gold jewellery, carpets and some agricultural products.
The arrangement was made under the US Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) programme which is designed to help developing countries. The amount of exports affected was valued at $691.6 million in 2000.
The move follows a declaration by President Bush earlier in the year that zero-tariffs would be re-introduced after they had been withdrawn following the Pokhran nuclear tests by India. Tariffs on the products had ranged between 1.2-15.6%
