Vietnam footwear exports top $1 billion

03/09/2001
Vietnam's trade ministry has announced that the country earned more than $1 billion from footwear exports in the first eight months of this year. The country has become a major producer in recent years, and footwear is now one of Vietnam's major export sectors, along with crude oil, textiles and seafood.

For the period to August, the country exported $1.02 billion in footwear, representing a year on year increase of 9%. The trade ministry has reportedly appealed to the prime minister to allow imports of shoe uppers to encourage the expansion of production and to allow the country to accept more orders to compete in the global market.
