Pakistan treatment plant could halt environmental damage

03/09/2001

The Multan Chambers of Commerce & Industry (MCCI) in Pakistan has proposed setting up an Industrial Cluster Treatment Plant (ICTP) in an effort to stop pollution from tanneries along the Nawabpur Road, in the Punjab.

More than 38 tanneries are operating without treatment facilities in the Nawabpur Road, causing pollution and contributing to health-related problems among the 50,000 residents of the region.  Ground water down to 70 feet is not potable in the area and unpleasant odours are said to be a particular problem.

The project will provide facilities for all the tanneries providing they can relocate to the industrial estate in the city of Multan. The cost of the treatment plant is estimated at PRs1.5 billion ($23.6 million), met in part by the Central and Punjab governments along with the Netherlands government. To encourage the tanneries to move, the MCCI has also asked the government to provide commercial plots in the industrial estate on an easy instalment payment plan.
