Bolivian anti-FMD vaccination programme hailed a success

03/09/2001

In July, Bolivia implemented a national vaccination campaign against foot and mouth disease (FMD). According to SENASAG, the National Service of Agricultural and Cattle Sanitation and Food Safety, the campaign was a total success with 700,000 head or 80% of the herd in the Santa Cruz province receiving the necessary dose. At the national level 60% of the cattle were vaccinated.

The government has invested approximately $600,000 on the campaign with the support of the Interamerican Development Bank (BID). Another campaign is scheduled for October this year when 800,000 doses of the vaccine will be administered in Santa Cruz and another 2.5 million doses in the rest of Bolivia at a cost of over $2 million.

The success of the July campaign shows that awareness among cattle breeders has grown compared with previous occasions when the vaccination rate had remained static at 40-60%.
