UK foot and mouth staff hold strike protest
20/08/2001
Workers in the UK government’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) are to hold a one-day strike on Monday, August 20 in protest over pay conditions.
DEFRA is the new name for the Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Food, which came in for heavy criticism over its handling of both the foot and mouth and BSE crises.
The pay dispute relates to differentials put in place when the department was recently set up. Staff working in areas where there is foot and mouth will not take part in the strike action.
