Brazilian clampdown on pirate goods pays off

A crackdown by customs authorities in the Brazilian port of Santos has resulted in the seizure of counterfeit goods worth BRL47 million ($18.6 million) since January.

Sourced mostly from Asia, the goods include leather apparel and accessories, footwear and toys – many bearing brand names. During the same six month period, Brazilian import revenues increased from BRL1.388 billion in the first half of 2000 to BRL1.606 billion.
