Chinese exports rose 6.6% in July, but the global economic slowdown continues to cast a shadow over China's export sector, according to the state news agency, Xinhua.

The figures were produced by China's General Administration of Customs, and represent a significant improvement on the data for June when there was a 0.6% decline in goods sold abroad.

Exports for the first seven months of the year were $147.5 billion, up 8.4% compared with the year-before period. Imports recorded an even greater rise, up 13% to $137.4 billion, resulting in a reduction in China's trade surplus for the period to just over $1 billion.
