Chinese/Argentine trade accord alarms Brazilian footwear sector
Brazilian footwear producers are studying their options following the news that Argentina might reduce or even lift the duties that apply to imports of Chinese footwear.
The development is seen as posing a particular threat as the Argentine market currently accounts for 8% of the Brazil’s footwear exports.
Speaking to the national press last week, Ivo Rizzardi, export director at Calçados Beira-Rio – a footwear producer that last year sold 600,000 pairs worth $2.5 million into Argentina - said: "Argentines are sophisticated consumers. They like famous brands and to be in fashion. We need to explore this profile." Currently, Argentina imports less than 1 million pairs from China.
