Sad end to Independent Leather plant

13/08/2001

The former site of the Independent Leather Manufacturing Co. in Gloversville, New Jersey, is to be cleaned up by the Environmental Protection Agency following the discovery of chemical contamination. The abandoned site fell into the hands of the City of Gloversville by default two years ago.

The building is now too dangerous to enter after heavy snowstorms destroyed part of the roof. The EPA has now started demolishing the building, which has chemicals used in the tanning process stored in more than 350 containers.
