Palestinian shoe and leather industry hit by unrest

06/08/2001

The Palestinian Ministry of Industry last week reported that footwear and leather production had fallen by 3.9% since the current unrest began 10 months ago, and that total industrial losses amounted to $769.7 million.

The Ministry attributed the losses to raw materials being held up at Israeli crossings and ports and the general disruption to trade and civilian movement caused by the conflict. The same report said an estimated $124.5 million had been lost in aborted industrial investment opportunities.
